RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Safe, effective, and biocompatible minimally invasive procedures with the potential to stimulate collagen production have been made to recover dermal thickness and skin quality. The main of this animal model experiment was to observe the effect of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and polydioxanone (PDO) biostimulators in collagen I and III after hypodermal injection. METHODOLOGY: Sixteen adult female rats (Wistar) were randomized into four groups and had dorsal treatment with: G1: hypodermic subcision (HS) only; G2: HS and PLLA hypodermic injection (HI), G3: HS and PDO HI; G4: Control, with no treatment. RESULTS: In histochemical, it was observed hypodermal and dermal tissue in more organized thickness in G3 and in G4 when compared to G1 and G2. There was few difference in G1 compared to G4. The tissue of G2 showed irregularities in the arrangement of collagen fibers, less defined structure and lower distribution of type I collagen compared to the other groups. There is a greater tendency for the proportions of type III collagen among tissues treated with both biostimulators (G2 and G3). PLLA and PDO had relatively similar percentages of collagen when compared to G4. The amount of type I collagen was higher in tissues treated with subcision, while type III collagen was higher in tissues treated with both biostimulators. CONCLUSION: G3 showed better performance in collagen production, although small, when compared with G2.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This split-mouth randomized clinical trial aimed to evaluate the influence of dental enamel deproteinization with sodium hypochlorite on orthodontic accessories breakages using 2 orthodontic adhesives. METHODS: Forty patients with indications for orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances were randomly divided into 2 groups according to the orthodontic adhesive used: Transbond XT (3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) (n = 20) and Orthocem (FGM Dental Products, Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil) (n = 20). A split-mouth trial was conducted in the maxillary teeth; the deproteinization process with 5% sodium hypochlorite was performed on the experimental side. The opposite side served as a control without deproteinization. The primary outcome was the number of orthodontic accessories breakages. The randomization was performed using the BioStat software (AnalystSoft Inc, Walnut, Calif). Single-blind was applied for patients. Orthodontic accessories were bonded according to the manufacturer's instructions. The accessories breakages were followed during the first 6 months of treatment. Intergroup comparisons were performed with t tests and 1 and 2-way analysis of variance. RESULTS: Thirty-nine patients concluded the trial. The Transbond XT group comprised 20 patients (9 male, 11 female), with a mean age of 20.77 ± 6.44 years. The Orthocem group included 19 patients (9 male, 10 female), with a mean age of 23.14 ± 7.98 years. The application of sodium hypochlorite before bonding did not influence the number of orthodontic accessories breakages (P = 0.867). The type of adhesive used, associated or not with the deproteinization, did not affect the number of orthodontic accessories breakages (P = 0.929). CONCLUSIONS: Enamel deproteinization with 5% sodium hypochlorite did not impact the number of orthodontic accessories breakages. In addition, the 2 bonding adhesives used showed similar clinical results, with or without the enamel deproteinization. REGISTRATION: The trial was registered at ensaiosclinicos.gov.br, ReBEC (no. RBR-39ntmjk). PROTOCOL: The protocol was not published before trial commencement. FUNDING: This research did not receive any grant from funding agencies.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The use of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) to correct gummy smile has become popular in recent years. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of BTX-A application in the correction of gummy smile 2 and 32 weeks after application. METHODS: The sample comprised 35 patients (30 female, 5 male) at a mean age of 25.51 years (±5.59) with gummy smile due to muscular hyperfunction. In each patient, 2U of botulinum toxin was applied in the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, 2 mm from the nasolabial fold. Photographs of spontaneous smiles were taken at 3 stages: before, 2 and 32 weeks after BTX application. Measurements of the gingival display were performed with the Radioface Studio 2 Software, and the calibration used the actual size of the right maxillary central incisor. Comparison of the three stages evaluated was performed with repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey tests. RESULTS: Gingival display decreased significantly 2 weeks after BTX-A application and increased after 32 weeks but did not return to the initial value. CONCLUSION: There was a significant improvement in gummy smile 2 weeks after botulinum toxin application, and a significant relapse in the gingival display after 32 weeks, however not returning to baseline values.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the 3x3 bonded retainer influence on the mandibular anterior crowding in cases treated with mandibular incisor extraction. METHODS: The sample comprised pretreatment, posttreatment and follow-up orthodontic records of 16 subjects (10 females and 6 males) with Class I malocclusion treated with extraction of a single mandibular incisor. The mean ages (± SD) at pretreatment, posttreatment and follow-up evaluation were 23.45 ± 9.14 years, 25.50 ± 8.95 years and 30.11 ± 8.59 years, respectively. The mean (± SD) treatment time and posttreatment evaluation time were 2.05 ± 0.45 years and 4.60 ± 1.85 years , respectively. Little irregularity index and interdental widths were evaluated using dental casts. The sample was divided into two subgroups, according to the presence of the 3x3 bonded retainer at follow-up. RESULTS: The subgroup without 3x3 bonded retainer presented a greater relapse at the follow-up, when compared to 3x3 bonded retainer subgroup. CONCLUSION: There was a significant relapse in cases treated with mandibular incisor extraction at follow-up. The subgroup without 3x3 bonded retainer showed a significant relapse at the follow-up when compared to the retainer group.

RESUMO

The present study sought to evaluate the impact of quarantine resulting from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on dental appointments and patients' positions and concerns regarding their ongoing dental treatment. Patients from private dental clinics answered an online questionnaire anonymously regarding their treatment, availability and willingness to attend dental appointments, and concerns about contamination. Descriptive statistics of the responses were performed with percentages and responses were compared between sexes, regions, and other aspects using the chi-squared test. Five hundred ninety-five patients (412 females and 183 males; mean age: 38.21 years) answered the questionnaire. Most patients reported they were receiving dental treatment (orthodontics) and would attend to a dental appointment; meanwhile, those patients not receiving treatment would not attend or would visit only in the case of an emergency. Males reported to be calmer than females, who were more anxious and afraid; as such, males reported more willing to go a dental appointment while, in general, females were not worried about how quarantine could affect dental treatment. Patients actively undergoing treatment and orthodontic patients were more concerned about a delay in treatment. There was a significant association between feelings about the COVID-19 pandemic and the level of willingness to attend a dental appointment. The quarantine recommended due to the COVID-19 pandemic was shown to have an impact on dental appointments and the anxiety levels of patients, since there was a significant association between patients' feelings and their willingness to attend a dental appointment. Overall, patients undergoing dental treatment and orthodontics were more willing to attend an appointment and were more concerned about an increase in treatment duration.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the level of satisfaction in the use of wraparound Hawley and thermoplastic maxillary retainers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study sample included 70 orthodontic patients (24 males and 46 females), who were in the retention stage (mean age = 20.80 years). All patients wore the two types of maxillary retainer for 1 month each, along with a 3×3 fixed mandibular retainer. After the use of each retainer, the patients responded to a questionnaire evaluating the level of satisfaction with their use of the maxillary retainer. Intergroup comparison was performed by independent t tests. Chi-square test was used to evaluate preference for the type of retainer by gender. RESULTS: The thermoplastic retainer was better for swallowing and the wraparound Hawley appliance was better for hygiene and durability. The other factors evaluated (adaptation, speech, comfort, esthetics, satisfaction, and fitting) did not show significant differences between the retainers. There was also no significant difference in preference for the appliances. CONCLUSIONS: Regarding the overall satisfaction and the preference, there was no difference between the wraparound Hawley and thermoplastic retainers. The wraparound Hawley appliance was better in hygiene and resistance than the thermoplastic retainer; and the thermoplastic appliance was better than the wraparound Hawley for swallowing fluids and saliva.

RESUMO

Introduction: Class II malocclusions have several treatment protocols, and we are increasingly moving towards more conservative orthodontics, avoiding dental extractions whenever possible. A great alternative for treatment in standard II patients has been the use of mandibular protraction appliance, which promote correction of this malocclusion. In the article in question will be reported the use of the Twin Force Bite Corrector appliance in the correction of a unilateral class II. Objective: case report of malocclusion with mandibular propellant. Method: One-phase treatment with the use of a fixed orthodontic appliance associated with a fixed mandibular propulsion orthopedic appliance, Twin Force Bite Corrector (TFBC). Result and Conclusion: The treatment was able to promote the reduction of the overjet, obtaining a stable Class I molar and canine relationship with coincident midlines and the improvement of the soft tissue profile.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the smile attractiveness of different gingival zeniths by general dentists, orthodontists and laypersons and the esthetic perception in the symmetric and asymmetric changes in gingival zeniths. METHODS: Posed photographs of five patients were taken and digitally manipulated in Keynote software, in the gingival zenith region, in increments of 0.5 to 1mm in maxillary central and lateral incisors, symmetrically and asymmetrically, in nine different ways for each patient. The photos were then uploaded to a website, where evaluators (general dentists, orthodontists and laypersons) could observe and vote according to their esthetic perception, scoring from 1 to 10, 1 being the least attractive and 10 the more attractive. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used for comparison. RESULTS: Asymmetric gingival zeniths were less attractive than symmetrical gingival zeniths; gingival zenith differences greater than 1mm were perceptible in the smile attractiveness, both by laypersons, general dentists and orthodontists. When comparing maxillary central incisors with maxillary lateral incisors, the aesthetic change performed in the central incisors are more perceptible than those performed in lateral incisors, both symmetrical and asymmetrical. In a general way, orthodontists and general dentists are more critical in the evaluation and perception of gingival zenith changes, with the laypersons perceiving this change only from 1mm of maxillary right central incisor asymmetrical change. CONCLUSIONS: Asymmetric gingival zeniths are less attractive than symmetrical ones. Gingival zenith differences greater than 1mm are perceptible in the smile attractiveness. Orthodontists and general dentists are more critical in evaluating smile esthetics.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aimed to compare the relapse of maxillary and mandibular anterior crowding, overjet, and overbite 5 years after treatment in subjects with Class I and Class II malocclusions treated with and without extractions, and also to evaluate the correlations among these factors. METHODS: The sample comprised 84 subjects with Class I and Class II malocclusions, treated with and without extractions. Group 1 comprised 44 subjects with an initial mean age of 12.96 years treated without extractions. Group 2 included 40 subjects with an initial mean age of 13.01 years treated with 4 premolar extractions. Data were obtained from dental casts at the pretreatment, posttreatment, and long-term posttreatment stages. Intergroup comparisons were performed with t tests. To verify the correlations among the relapse of overjet, overbite, and anterior crowding, the Pearson correlation test was used. RESULTS: Maxillary incisor irregularity and its relapse in the nonextraction group were significantly greater at the long-term posttreatment stage and the long-term posttreatment period, respectively. Long-term postreatment overjet changes were similar in the groups. Overbite and its relapse were significantly greater in the extraction group in the long-term posttreatment stage and period, respectively. There was a positive correlation of the relapse of mandibular incisor crowding with the relapse of overjet and overbite, and also a correlation of overjet and overbite relapses. CONCLUSIONS: There was greater maxillary crowding relapse in the nonextraction group and greater overbite relapse in the extraction group. There were significant and positive correlations of overjet and overbite relapses with mandibular anterior crowding relapse and consequently between overjet and overbite relapses.

The present study aimed to correlate, by means of a retrospective analysis, the postretention stability of the overbite and overjet with the relapse of the crowding of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth. The sample comprised 34 subjects (17 of each gender), at a mean initial age of 12.89 years, presenting Class I and II malocclusions, treated nonextraction and Edgewise mechanics. All patients presented at least 3mm of overbite and 4mm of overjet and maxillary and mandibular crowding from slight to severe. It was measured, in the dental casts from the stages pretreatment (T1), posttreatment (T2) and postretention (T3), the overbite, overjet and the maxillary and mandibular Little irregularity index. After data were obtained, the statistical analysis was performed. The intergroup comparison was performed by independent t tests. The ANOVA and Tukey tests were applied to verify the relapse of the overbite, overjet and maxillary and mandibular anterior crowding. To verify the presence of correlation among the relapse of the overbite, overjet and the anterior crowding, the Pearsons correlation test was used. Results did not show statistically significant difference between Angles Class I and Class II patients. There was correlation of the relapse of overbite with the relapse of overjet, however, there was no relationship among the relapse of overbite and overjet with the relapse of anterior crowding.
